Dental fillings are one of the most common dental treatments performed by Dr. Gardner in our Gouverneur, NY dentist office. A dental filling is commonly thought of as effective treatment for tooth decay and cavities, but a dental filling may also be recommended for a chipped or cracked tooth to restore both beauty and function- and avoid tooth loss.
Depending on the location and severity of the area to be treated, Dr. Gardner may recommend one of the following types of dental fillings:
- White fillings: White fillings are simply tooth colored dental fillings. They can be made from composite resin or porcelain. Quickly becoming the standard in modern dentistry, white fillings are virtually undetectable and provide long lasting strength and durability.
- Resin Dental Fillings: Resin dental fillings are made from a biocompatible composite resin which is applied directly to the tooth. Treatment with resin dental fillings may also be known as composite bonding. This type of filling is generally reserved for minor concerns or imperfections because it not as durable and lasting as other materials.
- Porcelain Dental Fillings: Porcelain dental fillings may also be called inlays, onlays or partial crowns. Used for patients with more significant damage or decay, porcelain dental fillings add additional strength to the tooth and are considered one of the most durable and lasting options.
Inlay vs. Onlay
An inlays covers cusps (or bumps) of the surface of the tooth. An onlay, sometimes called a partial crown, is more extensive, covering two or more cusps
Replacing Metal Dental Fillings
Dr. Gardner can replace your old, dark and leaking amalgam (metal) fillings with cosmetic white fillings for a more comfortable and natural looking restoration. In most cases, he will recommend a porcelain dental filling. If the old filling was large and removing it will compromise the tooth, Dr. Gardner may recommend a dental crown to add additional strength.
